This is largely a rather geeky post about my particular research interests, so apologies for that!
I have been doing research on the Canadian “bioeconomy” over the last 2-3 years, trying to understand how the concept is defined and used, and what this means for the establishment of particular policy frameworks to support it. As a result of my research, I’ve come up with a definition I think covers all the bases, as it were:
Definition: the bioeconomy is a concept that refers to the sustainable use of biological, renewable materials in the development of bio-based products, services and energy that substitute for existing fossil fuel-based products, services and energy, as part of a broader societal transition to a low-carbon future.
Any comments? Anything missing? Anything seriously wrong with it?
